A young girl is found murdered in her hospital room, five days after getting into a car accident which left her paralyzed and her passenger dead. Hawkes, who used to work at the hospital, has a bitter confrontation with his old boss, the hospital’s chief of staff, reminding him of why he quit being a doctor to become a coroner.(This episode resembles the case of Whitney Cerak and Laura VanRyn, two college students who were in a car accident. Laura was presumed to have survived, but only as ‘she’ was awakening out of the coma was it realized that Whitney had survived and Laura had died.)
